Description

“PROTEA” named after the Protea flowers that I encountered when I was climbing up Table Mountain in Capetown. This so-called “sugarbush” was baptized Protea by Carl Linnaeus, the 18th Century Swedish botanist who put in place the system of naming of the species. Protea comes from the Greek god Proteus, who was known to change form at will, and was associated with the concept of versatility. I expect that this name was chosen because these flowers come in so many different varieties. In South Africa, the Protea flower is the national flower, and is a symbol of change and hope. Our World, I feel, seems at times to be in need of a little bit of change and hope.”
